The AI, Big Data & Democracy Task Force is a growing cluster of EU-funded Horizon Europe projects committed to safeguarding and strengthening democratic participation in the age of artificial intelligence. The Task Force brings together diverse approaches and disciplines with a shared purpose: protecting democracy and civic participation from the risks posed by AI and Big Data, while harnessing their potential to make democratic systems more transparent, inclusive, and resilient.
The eight projects at the heart of the Task Force — KT4D, ITHACA, ORBIS, AI4Gov, INNOVADE, PERYCLES, AI4Deliberation, and NEUROCLIMA — each contribute a unique perspective, spanning political science, computer science, social innovation, behavioural science, and beyond. Together, they address ethical concerns around emerging technologies, enhance civic participation, and work to ensure that decision-making processes remain transparent and accountable. Their mission is closely aligned with the EU policy agenda, and in particular with flagship initiatives such as the European Democracy Shield and the AI Act — two cornerstones of Europe's commitment to trustworthy, human-centred digital governance.
Bringing together researchers, policymakers, CSOs and innovators across disciplines and borders, the Task Force produces joint publications, organises shared events, and develops policy-relevant outputs — all leveraging a broad dissemination network designed to support evidence-based democratic governance and translate research into real-world impact.
At its core, the Task Force is a vibrant and open ecosystem that thrives on new ideas, cross-disciplinary dialogue, and genuine collaboration. It is a space where academic rigour meets policy relevance, and where the complexity of democratic challenges is met with the full breadth of what modern research can offer.
As the Task Force enters a new and expanded phase — with eight member projects and an ambitious programme of joint activities underway — we are pleased to announce the launch of a dedicated LinkedIn channel. This channel will serve as a central hub for updates from all member projects, news on joint Task Force activities, and curated insights from the broader fields of digital democracy, AI, knowledge technologies, and deliberation. Follow the AI, Big Data & Democracy Task Force on LinkedIn and stay at the forefront of the conversation.
